Hyper — my scrolling addiction!
Einstein once said “I fear the day that technology will surpass our human interaction. The world will have a generation of idiots.” Was he right?
In the age of Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram and now Pokemon Go, billions of people are spending their time staring at their screen and swiping through tons of online content.
A new Nielsen Company audience report focused on media consumption, reveals that adults in the United States devoted about 10 hours each day to consume media during while 81% of adults in the US have smartphones, and use them about one hour and 39 minutes daily on average to consume media.
While media consumption is growing the behavior towards it is changing. A new report gathered from 7Park Data — pulled from a multi-million panel of anonymous U.S. Android users — shows that during its first week, Pokémon GO users spent 75 minutes per day playing, versus only 35 minutes on the Facebook app. Things got worse for YouTube and Snapchat, which according to 7Park dropped by 9% and 18%, respectively in daily active users.
The data shows that we’re spending 4.1% more time on our smartphones since Pokemon Go, but at the cost of apps like YouTube and Snapchat.
The takeaway from all this? User behavior is shifting, and it all depends on the “painkillers” and “vitamins” that are available.
The biggest challenge from all this, is the knowledge gained. As Einstein predicted, we’re living in the age of countless streams of information, that is pushing us towards the click, like and the next 100 pieces of cats and puppies. Users are not even reading the tittle anymore, they’re just swiping through.
My Painkiller — The Hyper App
The single best video app that is out there on the market is Hyper. Hyper, available for free on iPhone, iPad and Apple TV, is an app that helps you recover the 60 minutes of endless browsing you would spend to find something worth watching. You get 10 videos each day that are curated by real humans, which include filmmakers and journalists who want to provide content worth watching.
Hyper has changed my bedtime behavior, which used to be around scrolling through Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat, and then moving to Quora and Flipboard. After a couple of nights with Hyper, I’ve managed to improve myself, especially due to the amazing content selection from the app. Every night, I watch fantastic stories about things that I’ve never heard before.
To be honest, I think it’s quite impossible to discover content like this on your own. You can even personalize curation by prioritizing what you want to follow. I think that Hyper is an app, that puts a break on your rapid scrolling speed and makes you want to watch these 10 selected videos each day.
You discover how you can go from food waste to clean energy, you learn that you can hack without wires or how one mans photos are changing the world.
And that’s why in the age of information, content, scrolling, likes and comments, I choose to go with Hyper!
